Tangier - French automobile manufacturer, Renault, has launched the construction works of its new car production plant as well as the Tanger-Med training centre in automobile-related professions in the Melloussa industrial free zone, near TangierThe ¤ 1.1billion project comprises a 314-ha assembly plant with access to the Tanger-Med port platform, which provides the Renault-Nissan Alliance with one of the largest manufacturing complexes in the Mediterranean.
The Renault-Nissan industrial park will be operational by 2012 with a production capacity of 30 cars by hour (170,000 cars per year) to reach a potential of 400,000 cars annually.
It is expected to generate 6,000 direct and 300,000 indirect jobs.
The ¤ 7.5 million training centre will be ready in June 2010 and is meant to provide the plant with qualified manpower, operators, technicians as well as continuing training.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of the Renault Euro-Med, Jacques Chauvet, said 85% of the plant production will be directed to export, notably to Europe, Asia and Africa.
For his part, Morocco's Minister of Trade, Industries and New
Technologies, Ahmed Reda Chami, said the Renault Tanger-Med will enable Morocco to be a competitive production and export platform in the region (the Maghreb, Africa and Europe).
Renault has operated in Morocco since 1928 and has assembled vehicles in the Renault-owned Moroccan car company SOMACA plant since 1966.
The low-cost car Logan was launched in Morocco in July 2005 and has become the best-selling vehicle in this market in its first six months. In 2007, 12,700 Logan cars were sold.
